As a consultant for Telus Advertising services I was asked to develop a game for their client, the Calgary Flames to go on their website. I developed the game in Java v1.0 as an applet embedded in the web page. This was a great way to learn a new and exciting language and showcase its capabilities.
I worked on the game design with the graphic designers in the department. I developed the idea that the player was to attempt a Face Off with the goaltender to attempt to score as many goals over several progressively more challenging game periods. I introduced defenders who have faster reactions with each level.
One thing that was really fun was the idea to draw the goal tender's head separately to the body. This allowed his head to track the main player so that it looked like he was following his every move.
We managed to get the Calgary Flames to supply some sound bytes. The goal tender would grunt when hit by the puck and if the player over charged the power meter before shooting the puck, Ed Whalen (a famous sport commentator) would say "HE RIPPED IT!" and the puck would shoot up out of the arena!
